Emmi Itäranta (born 1976) grew up in Finland and now resides in Canterbury, UK. She writes fiction in Finnish and English. Her debut novel Memory of Water (HarperVoyager 2014) has won numerous awards, including a James Tiptree Jr. Award honours list mention and the Kalevi Jäntti Prize for young writers in Finland. It was nominated for the Philip K. Dick Award, Arthur C. Clarke Award, the Kitschies Golden Tentacle Award, the Compton Crook Award and Premio Salerno Libro d’Europa. Emmi’s second novel, The City of Woven Streets (UK) / The Weaver (US) won the Tampere City Literary Award and the Kuvastaja Award for the best fantasy book in Finland.
Coming from an eclectic writing background, Emmi’s former life includes stints as a columnist, theatre critic, dramaturge, scriptwriter and press officer. She wishes to keep writing until the stars go cold.
