A disgraced swordsman who has been living off his reputation as a past member of a notorious mercenary band leaves town one step ahead of justice.
In search of gainful(ish) employment, he heads for a former haunt, the seaport city of Cray. His past, however, soon catches up with him in the form of Julia, a notorious thief and sometimes assassin. He finds himself thrust into an impossible situation, caught in the midst of a bitter feud between the city's two ruling families, and is forced to embark on what will surely prove to be a suicide mission. A novella of sword play, betrayal, and derring-do, seen from the perspective of a cynical anti-hero who struggles to live up to expectations but excels at living down to them.
“A cheerfully brutal story of betrayal and skulduggery, vicious fun from start to finish.” – Adrian Tchaikovsky
“A quick, highly readable, swords & sorcery romp… you can see Whates has learned his craft.” – Mark Lawrence
“The Double-Edged Sword is a slice of pure golden-age sword and sorcery action, packed with rogues, betrayals and dubious morals.” – Jen Williams
“Action, deception, a daring heist and lots of twists and turns. Excellent world building and intriguing characters. I really enjoyed it!” – Gail Z. Martin
“It doesn’t so much whet your appetite for more, it leaves
you ravenous. Old school Sword & Sorcery with a liberal twist of Grimdark.
Highly recommended!” – Amazon reviewer
“I read a lot, 55-60 books minimum a year, and roughly 70% of what I read is fantasy. This is, honestly, one of the best things I have read in years…” – LibraryThing reviewer
“A wee blood soaked gem of a novella, highly entertaining and begging a sequel or two. If you like your Grimdark dark, this delivers in spades. Excellent.” – goodreads reviewer
“As fantasies go, The Double-Edged Sword counts as one of the most atmospheric and evocative in the grimdark genre. Economical with words but colossal on ambiance… Highly readable,” – Aurealis
“Whates has capably condensed a great deal of world-building to create a well-defined, engaging story within a mere eighty pages… The Double-Edged Sword is a fast, engaging read, well-balanced between action scenes and humour.” – ParSec “Whates writes well in easy-to-read contemporary prose and manages a perfect balance of plot, world-building and characters.” – SFCrowsnest “It’s told with a wry humour that makes it a true pleasure to read, and while the ending is very satisfactory, it leaves the reader wanting more.” – Greydogtales “The story moves at quite a pace, easily taking the reader with it… The phrase that kept coming to my mind was ‘well-crafted’ – Ian Whates really knows what he is doing in story-telling. It’s very well written with a sharp, close, focus.” – BSFA reviews “I am embarrassed as a pastor to admit that I like the main character in this story. He is a thief, a liar, and a murderer. He exhibits all the human traits that I often preach against, yet, I am fascinated by him… This is an excellent story.” – LibraryThing reviewer Available as a paperback, a limited edition hardback signed by the author, and also in digital formats. |
